The Fastest hunk of junk in the Galaxy - Part 1

There is little argument about the importance of the Millennium Falcon in the world of fictional space ships. Its a design classic and arguably the best movie ship of all time.

Master Replicas released a beautiful studio scale piece, but its only for those with a lot of spare cash to throw around, not to mention the space to exhibit such a fine model.
Fine Molds have produced what many believe to be the definitive Falcon model kit, much more accurate than the ERTL kit which currently sits unmade in my loft, awaiting my attention. (One day I'll sort it out, thin out those walls and paint it good!)
The Falcons in my collection include the Micro Machine version, the Tomy version, the Titanium version and, most recently, the De Agostini version. Lets start with Tomy.

Tomy Millennium Falcon

Released in about 2003 this was available in the UK via imports from Japan (I think). Its about 3 inches long and the level of detail on this little gem is great. There is some warping of the soft plastic but its worth it for the detail and finish.
The gun turrets and landing legs are supplied separately and need to be attached to the main body. Do NOT try this on a train! In my excitement I did this with the first version I bought a few years ago and lost one of the five landing legs! This version now lives in my car, pictures in a another post soon.
The turrets and legs have not been weathered in the same way as the main body so can look a bit too clean when put in place, nothing a serious modeller couldn't fix.
All in all its a lovely piece, they retail for about £5, if you can find one.

HMS Camden Lock

This little beauty is a scratch built model created by the very talented Velbor. The ship is the HMS Camden Lock from Hyperdrive, the BBC 2 sitcom that I worked on. The ship design is a joint effort by writer Andy Riley, modeller Andrew Glazebrook and myself. Velbor created this from very little reference, guessing at sizes and proportions. He's got it almost spot on. The detail is great and its a very nice addition to my collection that means a lot to me. He's now got some proper reference and dimensions so he's planning on making one about two thirds of this size.

Corgi Enterprise D

Celebrating 40 Years of Star Trek, Corgi released this die-cast replica of the USS Enterprise D from Star Trek, The Next Generation complete with a special Starfleet emblem stand.
Its a nice piece, my main complaint is that the surface work is too heavy. It looks pretty good in pictures but seems very dark to the eye when compared to the ship we're used to seeing on the TV.
The model is made from a combination of die cast metal and plastic. The saucer section is kept in balance by being made of the lighter plastic, the metal is kept for the engineering section.
The nacelles look quite nice in when the light catches them and passes through the coloured plastic.

Rare Scorpio Picture

Glazy sent me this picture of the Scorpio model from Blake's 7. Pictures of the model are rare and this one looks like it might have been scanned in from a magazine. (See my earlier post for more pictures). The detail is really nice and it once again proves that what was seen on screen didn't do justice to the craftsmen who made them.
We've been having some building work done at home over the Summer so I've had most of my collection boxed away. I hope to be able to resume normal posts again soon.

Glazy sent me this info: The 3 shooting miniatures of the Scorpio were 4 foot, 16 inches and 5 inches.

Liberator Spotters Guide - Part 2 (updated)

DSV 2
A common mistake is to label the Liberator as DSV1, or Deep Space Vessel 1. This is an error that seems to have surfaced with Comet Miniatures release but is repeated even today with Titan Find's kit. Apologies in advance for being pedantic but the ship is clearly identified in the episode Redemption as DSV 2, (see clip, about half way through).

How big is The Liberator?
The size of the Liberator was never stated on screen or in any official literature. The scale seems to conflict in different episodes depending on the relative size of other models produced. I got the impression it was meant to me a huge ship but we never got to know. But if we take the first appearance of the Liberator where we see it next to the Prison Ship London we can deduce its apparent size. (Warning, this gets really geeky!)

Looking at this picture above of the London, the circular connecting tube hatch is approximately 2 meters in diameter – big enough for a man to cross. This makes the length of the ship approx 30 meters.

Now compare this to the size of the Liberator in this picture. We know the London is very close to the Liberator as it uses its connecting tube to dock with the Liberator. The London fits about 10 times into the length of the Liberator so I would put it at about 300 meters from engine to end of prongs. (smaller than I’d imagined it to be!) This is just my own theory , if you can suggest an alternative please leave a comment.

Glazy sent me the following compilation of grabs from the DVD, see his comment below for further details.

There are several instances during the series where we see closeup detail on the surface of the Liberator that is difficult to reconcile with the wider shots without presuming its absolutely massive. Personally I've always seen it as being very very big and perhaps my efforts to pin down its size are missing the point and removing some of its mystery. Whatever you think this is a big old ship.

With regard to Glazy's note about the Flight Deck location this is another mystery. The novelisation describes a lift just inside the airlock that turns are rises rapidly suggesting the Flight Deck could be somewhere totally different.

Titan Find's Scorpio

This is one to save up my pennies for. If you're not in your 30's and from the UK you might not recognise this gem. It's the Scorpio, the 'other' ship from Blakes 7. The Liberator was a tough act to follow but over the years I've warmed to this particular hunk of junk.
Now Titan Find are releasing a great kit, details are still a bit sketchy but the pictures on their website look pretty good to me. You can view an earlier post about the Scorpio here.

Liberator Spotters Guide - Part 1

The Liberator from the BBC Sci-Fi series Blake's 7 is, for many a large child like me, one of the most iconic space ships designs in TV history.
Its design history is well documented, having been snatched from under the in-house model-building team's collective noses, especially that of Ian Scoones, by the series Production Designer Roger Murray-Leach. Roger's design for the Liberator, unrestricted by a background in model building, was one of the most alien looking ships of that time. Rogers initial drawings contrasted well with the more earth-bound designs of the other ships in the series. The initial designs were then handed over to external freelancer Martin Bower to make sense of and build. Martin's contribution to the final look and feel of the Liberator has, in my view, been overlooked. Without his detailing the Liberator might never have had the feeling of scale that jumped out from the screen.

It wasn't long before the first replica of the Liberator hit the shops, a small die cast ship from Corgi. A reproduction of this toy was released with a Special Edition of the DVD of the series. Unfortunately some of these are now surfacing on E-bay purporting to be genuine 1977 die cast toys.

There is a simple way to tell the two apart. First of all you'll be hard pushed to find a 1977 version without any scratches or exposed silver metal showing through chipped paint. Also there is often damage to the thin plastic antenna, usually the central one has been bitten off by an excitable child! So if its all shinny and new and it looks too good to be true it probably is. But the real clincher is that the modern version has a blank side on the main hull, where the 1977 version has the words Made in Great Britain.
Also the Corgi logo is different, being lower case letter in 1977 and uppercase on the new version.
You can see this clearly in my comparison pictures of my 1977 version, (on the left), and the DVD version, (on the right).
My 1977 version was very kindly given to me several years ago by Gordon Fraser who has a second one in his collection which is in much better condition than mine.

There was also a colour variant released at the same time. I'm not sure what the thinking behind this was but I seem to remember that it wasn't even branded as Blake's 7 so perhaps it was intended as a generic spaceship for sale in other markets. (I'm just guessing on this.)

Tomy X-Wing Fighter

Star Wars Candy Toy Diorama X-Wing Fighter by Tomy is one of a series of ships and figures released a few years ago. I'm specifically interested in the ships and have managed to find a few of these since their release. The other ships in the set include the Millennium Falcon, Slave 1, AT-AT Walker and a Jedi Star fighter.

I picked this one up recently in Forbidden Planet London. There were a few boxes stacked up by the till so I grabbed this one to add to my collection. I already have the Falcon and the Jedi Starfighter but still need to hunt down the AT-AT walker and Slave 1.

As I've come to expect from these releases the detail is simply mind blowing. The product is made of plastic and sits on its own base complete with fuel cables and other equipment. The wings are closed and the landing gear down.

The detail, painting and weathering is excellent, especially when you consider just how small this model is! My only quibble would be the tiny R2-D2 sitting behind the cockpit. He's so small and looks a bit like a little football. He's a victim of the size of the piece, I'm not sure how it could be improved without breaking your eyes!

Rag Tag Fleet

Add this to my wish list: Timeslip Creations are releasing the famous Rag Tag fleet from the original Battlestar Galactica as resin kits. They are to scale with the Battlestar model also available from their website. The first three are available to buy now, my only concern is that I don't rate my model painting skills!

Raiders of the Lost Loft

This is my loft space which I converted a few years ago. The space is full of all my stuff, all the kids stuff and every other bit of rubbish we've built up over the last 10 years. It needs a good clean out and de-clutter. The display shelves were put up to house my micro machines but since then I've added a lot more to my small spaceships collection. Most of the new ones are larger than the micros so they are not all being displayed properly.

My micro machine collection includes ships from Star Wars, Star Trek, Babylon 5, Aliens and Terminator.

The rest of my collection is not displayed in any order, in fact most of them are in two cardboard boxes. One day I'll have a great display case, until then this will have to do.

Product Enterprise Space 1999 Eagle

Product Enterprise have blessed us over the last few years with the beautiful range of Eagle replicas from Gerry Anderson's Space 1999. I have two so far, the standard transporter and the Laboratory Eagle Gift set which includes a tiny moon buggy and a Tank.

One day I would love to add a Rescue Eagle to these two but I'll have to save my pennies and come up with a good excuse to smuggle it into the house!

The detail on these models is very good, being a mix of die cast metal and plastic parts.

Product Enterprise are evolving into Iconic Replicas and are moving into doing larger models with smaller runs. Their range is fantastic and I can see the logic in this but I'm disappointed we won't be seeing further releases in this size - they take up less space and are much more affordable than their larger range.

Tantive IV & Consular-class space cruiser

Who can forget the opening shot of the original Star Wars? As an impressionable 7-year-old sat in the cinema it was like I'd been transported to another world, another time, (or a long time ago in a galaxy far far away, as someone once noted). So its no surprise that the Rebel blockade Runner, or the Tantive IV to give it its proper name, should be one of my favourite ships from the Star Wars universe.

Most people know of its lengthy design history, having started life as Han Solo's Millennium Falcon before moving to Alderraan. When that design was rejected for being too reminiscent of Space: 1999's Eagle Transporter, it was adapted to become the CR90. The most obvious change was replacing its cockpit area with the distinctive "hammerhead" bridge section.

In addition, the escape pods were relocated to the lower hull, with laser cannons being mounted where the pods had originally been placed. This was essential because Tantive IV had to launch an escape pod while inside the Imperial-class Star Destroyer Devastator's ventral hangar bay.

It was originally christened the Star of Alderaan before having its name changed to the Tantive IV. Production referred to the vehicle as a "Rebel starfighter," a "Galactic Cruiser," and a "Rebel blockade runner" at various times throughout the making of Star Wars, while the term "Alderaan star cruiser" was also used during the making of Episode III.
Two versions of the Tantive IV have been released as part of Hasbro's Titanium range. The first is the battered version from A New Hope, complete with red markings on the hammerhead section.
The second version is the original markings seen at the end of Revenge of The Sith. This is meant to be the same ship but 25 years earlier, this time with mainly blue markings.
Its interesting to compare these two to the Micro Machine version released in the 1990's. I'd failed to notice how many liberties had been taken with the design in order to accommodate the production process. The ship has been shortened making it feel like a baby version compared to its Titanium 'mother'.
The Consular-class space cruiser was one of the first ships seen in The Phantom Menace. It boded well for a film full of the same design law and thoughtful homage/lineage to the original trilogy. Alas, it was not to be. While The Phantom Menace does try to play with the design lineage but its soon thrown out the window when Attack of The Clones comes along.

The Consular-class cruiser was based on rejected concept art for the Millennium Falcon, which would eventually be modified to become the Tantive IV. For The Phantom Menace, the Republic cruiser was designed as a "devolved" version of the Tantive IV to provide a link to the original trilogy. The rejected Millennium Falcon concept art was also used as the basis for the Corellian gunship, resulting in that vessel closely resembling the Consular-class cruiser.

The Consular-class space cruiser was painted red to declare its diplomatic immunity and to also serve as a warning not to attack. Red was the color of ambassadorial relations and neutrality for capital ships of the Republic, according to Wookipedia

The Republic cruiser was equipped with a salon pod that served as a secure meeting area for Republic representatives and leaders of groups in conflict. There was also a variety of salon pods that catered to different alien species. In emergency situations, the entire salon pod could eject from the mother craft, and with its own sensors and life support equipment, protect the diplomatic crew on board. The craft also carried a number of escape pods.I have 3 different versions of this ship: the largest is an Action Fleet toy, the middle one is from the titanium range and the smallest is a snap together model kit.
The action fleet version has some nice detail but is intended to be more toy than collectible. The front section opens so you can put in two little figures which came with the ship, (and have been thrown away!)It comes with a display stand but also has folding landing legs, which I don't think are seen in the film model. The engines can be made to 'glow' by moving a switch which pushes an orange plastic plane to the top of the engines.
Next up is the Titanium die cast model from Hasbro.It has the expected level of detail from this range, not bad but room for improvement.
This also has a landing leg and the glowing engines gizmo!
Finally its the snap fix kit, I have no idea of the manufacturer.
Some nice detail, but its very light and the plastic is slightly translucent being quite thin in places.

Enterprise D

I recently purchased the latest set of Johnny Lightning Star Trek miniatures, including a version of the UUS Enterprise NCC1701 D in its final moments as it crashes into the atmosphere of a planet. (See Star Trek Generations feature film.) This got me thinking about all the different Enterprise D's I've got, so here they all are.

Johnny Lightning - Legends of Star Trek, Series 4 - Battlestations!
This release has a painted edge that tries to recreate the crash sequence from the movie. Its not a bad attempt and can be quite convincing from certain angles. The overall finish is quite shinny, giving the model the feel of a 1950's tin toy. The level of detail is good and its a nice size. The saucer can seperate from the secondary hull. This model comes with a die cast display stand that allows some posability.
Romando Enterprise D
These Star Trek 1/7000 scale models are made by Romando, Japan. This series includes 11 ships, all about 2 or 3 inches length and pre-painted. As is the case with most Japanese releases the detail is excellent, it really packs it in. This one is a slightly creamier colour when compared to the rest which all have a blue tint to them, see collected image above.
Furuta Enterprise D & All Good Things Version
These models are a nice size but lack detail, especially when compared to the smaller Romando versions. There is none of the surface panelling seen on other versions, even the tiny Micro Machine editions have the escape pods picked out in a different colour. They look good as a collection but could have been a lot better. They are very light in weight too, being all soft plastic.

Galoob Micro Machines Enterprise D & All Good Things Version
These tiny gems were the beginning of my collection back in the early 1990's. The first edition of the Enterprise E was a single piece, the later version had a seperating saucer section. The picture below shows the difference between the two editions, the first is smaller, lighter and less detailed. The second version is a big improvement.The alternative future version with the 3 nacelles is a nice treat.

Cylon Basestar

Another lovely little model from Konami is the Cylon Basestar from the original series of Balltestar Galactica. The level of detail is very high, as I've come to expect from Konami. There is a lack of surface markings but I presume this is because the original shooting model was just a series of greys without much in the way of decals.
These toys are made from plastic which does make them prone to warping, as can be seen in this picture. Given the toys size and level of detail I think this is not too noticeable and doesn't detract from this being a great addition to my collection.If you like the Basestar you might like to see Fantastic Plastic's kit version. Or this one from Kenndy Shipyards, complete with lights. Also while I was looking about for some reference I came across Ravenstar Studios making some interesting stuff.

Lego HMS Camden Lock

This fantastic oddity was created by Peter Reid, or Legoloverman as he is also known. He's recreated Hyperdrive's HMS Camden Lock in Lego!

Thunderbirds Fireflash & Elevator Cars

The Fireflash airliner from Thunderbirds has to be one of the most graceful and elegant planes ever to appear on our screens. The series started in 1965, long before I was born so its something I've caught up on through its many repeats on UK television. The first episode, Trapped in the Sky, features the atomic-powered airliner Fireflash on its maiden flight from London to Tokyo. Obviously things don't go as planned and International Rescue are soon on the scene with 3 elevator cars to help bring Fireflash back to the ground in one piece. The sequence is edited light a tense liveaction film and still stands up today as a remarkable sequence.
Konami released a Fireflash toy as part of their Thunderbirds range. These are quite hard to find now but I managed to pick up the entire set from Comet Miniatures. As usual with Konami replicas the detail is excellent for the scale. These toys are plastic and require some assembly. The parts usually slot together quite well but some may need gluing to keep them in place.

As an added bonus the Fireflash model comes with 3 tiny tiny Elevator cars. These mini miracles are so detailed in spite of their size.

This isn't a giant finger, just very small elevator cars!
Also from Konami is a range of Thuderbird Pod vehicles. These depict various vehicles used by Thuderbird 2 in different episodes. They come on an interlocking stand that forms a diorama of part of the Thunderbirds underground silo. I bought mine from Greylight but you can still pick them up on Ebay. The Elevator Car pack contains two cars and part of the base.Finally from Konami is a slightly larger Elevator Car by itself, jolly good fun too!

Enterprise NX01

Johnny Lightning have so far released 3 ranges of their Legends of Star Trek miniatures, with a 4th on its way about now. Generally these are nice replicas with a decent amount of detail on them. You can find detailed information about the releases here. These two craft, both the NX01 Enterprise from 'a spin-off too far' Enterprise. This first version was from the 1st wave of releases and shows the Enterprise as most viewers would know it.
I have to say I'm not a fan of the design as it looks too much like a ship from the Next Generation era rather than being a predecessor to Kirks classic Enterprise. It feels like the designers just weren't brave enough to go retro with the look and feel of the show. I'm sure the casual viewer wouldn't even know this was meant to be set before the original series.
That said these replicas are very faithful to the ships design. The surface detailing and painting is a bit spartan but seems to work. The stand allows for a range of movement and you can pose the ship as you wish.The second ship is from a two part episode set in the Mirror Universe when the Federation are a bit nastier and a tad more right-wing. While I enjoyed the changes made to the ship the story left me wanting. The replica is fun and makes the original look a bit plain in comparison.

The only comparable replica of the Enterprise NX-01 that I know of is by Japanese manufacturer Romando. I only have one or two of the Romando releases but the quality is very high. You can see some images on them here. (I will post some images of my Romando collection in a future post.)

Wish List - Scorpio

There has yet to be a model or toy of the Scorpio from season 4 of Blake's 7. This would be top of my wish list for a nice small replica.The model was built at the BBC in the early 80's by, amongst others, Ron Thornton of Foundation Imaging fame. After working at the Beeb Ron went on to pioneer computer generated spaceships in Babylon 5 and Star Trek Voyager.

The detailed model suffered from some rushed lighting & camera work, poor compositing and very grainy footage. I'm sure if these models were placed side by side with feature film models of the same time they would compare quite favourably

The prop only last for one season, its brief on-screen career was ended when it crashed into the forests of Guada Prime. There are one or two scratch builds around the world but if anyone has made a small replica I am not aware of it.

As Glazy points out Titan Find are working on a model of the Scorpio.

Serenity

Firefly was the short-lived classic TV series created by the talent-force that is Joss Whedon. The series spawned a well received feature film, Serenity, named after lead character Mal Reynolds’ ship. I always pictured the series as being ‘The Adventures of Han Solo’ and Serenity was defiantly in the mould of the Millennium Falcon. The design echoes its insect origins and makes nice use of multi-levels, something you don’t often see in a smaller ship.

This ship comes from Dark Horse, best known for their comics output. This is what they have to say:

The model has a nice weight to it and sits well on its stand. There is an option to hang it instead but I would not recommend doing this from your car mirror – it’s just too big! I would imagine this is why they’ve called it an ornament; perhaps you might consider hanging it over your desk or from your Christmas tree. Personally I think it looks fine on its stand.

The level of detail is fine, noting exceptional, but it seems fairly accurate. The biggest disappointment is the absence of the Serenity name from the side of the hull, something prominently seen in the movie. This is a shame and lets down what is otherwise a very nice piece.

Also available is an ‘in disguise’ version which depicts Serenity’s flight through Reaver territory disguised as a Reaver vessel. It’s not pretty, it’s not meant to be either. I’m undecided if I want to shell out for this one, I think I’m happy with the standard version.

Battlestar replicas

These great replicas come from two different manufacturers and from two very different versions of the same show. I've always been a fan of the original Battlestar Galactica ever since I saw it as a kid at the cinema here in the UK, (they re-edited the TV movie pilot episode for theatrical release.) The Galactica has always been a great ship, very much in the wake of the phenomenon of Star Wars but still original and distinctive. The original ships are from Japanese manufacturer Konami and are made of plastic. The level of detail on these models is exceptional and far superior to the die-cast Hasbro titanium ships. Konami released 3 Battlestars, Galactica, Pegasus and Atlantia. My mate Glazy managed to get me these from Forbidden Planet in Middlesbrough, at the time I only wanted the Pegasus and Galactica and didn't pick up the Atlantia even though Glazy had managed to reserve me one. Whenever I've denied the little voice inside me shouting 'buy it' I always end up regretting it later. I don't plan on ever selling any of these but they have increased in price quite considerably, enough to push any Atlantias out of my price range.

All of these ships are about 4 inches long. The new Galactica from Hasbro had its stand hole positioned too far back, it meant that the front dipped down when displayed making it look like it was heading into a nose-dive. This picture shows how it should appear with the stand set back, in reality my ship was never this level so I decided to do some alterations!
Using the two screws on the underside I opened up the model. I carefully drilled a new hole closer to the middle of the ship. I then used the plastic housing from the original hole and slotted that into the new hole. You can see the new hole in this picture below, its close to the lettering. The original hole can be see towards the back of the ship, close to the rear screw. Its not the most pretty of modifications but it does the job very well. My Battlestar now flys in a straight line!

It's interesting to have these four displayed together and compare their designs and detailing. The Konami wins hands down for detail but the Hasbro models are die-cast and have more weight to them. Overall the level of detail and finish is good on the Hasbros too but its only when I got close in with my camera set to macro that I could appreciate just how much detail is on the Konami models. I wonder how much of the detail comes down to the source material? Obviously the original series used large practical models with massive detailing built up from kit parts. The new series relies on CG models which may or may not have as much detail as the classic series, my instinct say they probably don't.

I always love a good sister-ship! Design variants within a fleet are always enjoyable and the Pegasus is no exception. Its not my favourite design to be honest, its a bit too clunky and symmetrical for my liking but its fun to see the two ships together.

Hello fellow closet toy spaceship fans. I've set up this blog to comment on some of my growing collection of toy & replica space ships. It's something I've enjoyed collecting for almost 13 years now and I have amassed quite a large collection. alas most of them live in my loft, out of sight due to a lack of space, a growing family and a demanding business. I felt that putting some of this stuff on a blog, and eventually a website, would help rem ind me of whats hiding upstairs.
